PDT Levulan® Kerastick® &
Blu-U® Light
More and more patients with moderately severe acne
cannot take antibiotics because of bacterial resistance
or side effects. These patients are not severe enough
to warrant taking ACCUTANE® and many just don’t
want to
take ACCUTANE®.
This situation has created a void in our treatment of
this disease.
Fortunately, a new approach called photodynamic
therapy has emerged.
· The chemical Levulan® is applied
to all areas of the face with the Kerastick®
· This material is given 30 minutes
to be adequately absorbed into sebaceous oil glands and then
the patient is exposed to the Blu-U Light for 8 minutes. This
activates the Levulan® and causes the release of highly
charged oxygen radicals which diminish the sebaceous glands
and decrease inflammation.
· 3 – 4 treatment sessions,
each 3 to 4 weeks apart are recommended.
What can you expect post treatment?
A brisk, red reaction resembling a sunburn may occur for
2 to 3 days and acne lesions, dry, heal and fade over the
next few weeks. After the series of 3 – 4 treatments,
acne can remain under good control for 9 – 12 months.

Candela V-beam™ , COOLTOUCH® III Lasers & Blu-U®
light
These "state-of-the-art" lasers and Blu-U®
light without Levulan® are also available for the treatment
of acne. They decrease inflammation, shrink sebaceous glands
and kill bacteria. They are less effective than photodynamic
therapy but do not produce a “sunburn” reaction.
Both photodynamic therapy and lasers can be utilized in
conjunction with other topical and oral acne therapies. Back to Top |
