| BOTOX® is a highly purified toxin derived from the bacteria
clostridium botulinum. It works by blocking receptor sites on
muscles and preventing acetyl choline, released by nerves, from
stimulating muscles to contract.
BOTOX® is utilized in the skin in very small and safe
amounts to selectively block the function of certain facial
muscles that are involved in wrinkle formation.
Best locations to inject BOTOX® are frown lines, forehead
lines and crows feet lines.
How long does it last?
The first treatment involves injection into strong thick
muscle and therefore usually only lasts three to four months.
At subsequent sessions the muscle is smaller and weaker (since
it has not been used) and the injections can last five to
six months. The BOTOX® action also wears off gradually
so there is ample time to reschedule another appointment.
SIDE EFFECTS:
Occasionally some slight drooping of the eyebrow can occur,
but this can be fixed by injecting the opposing upper eyelid
muscle that is pulling down the brow.
Temporary bruising, as with any needle puncture procedure
can occur.
Uncommonly, mild headaches, numbness, tingling or a feeling
of heaviness may occur, but these symptoms disappear in one
to two days.
BOTOX® for Hyperhidrosis
BOTOX® has been approved by the FDA for treating severe
underarm sweating (HYPERHIDROSIS).
Following the application of topical anesthetic, injections of
BOTOX® into the affected areas can result in elimination of
sweating for approximately six months. This procedure may
be covered by your medical insurance.
SIDE EFFECTS:
There are no known significant side effects. However as with
any needle puncture procedure there can be some bruising.
