Hyperhidrosis

Treatments

Hyperhidrosis is defined as sweating (especially underarms) that is so severe it interferes with your daily activities and is unaffected by the use of even clinical-strength antiperspirants. At Dr. Howard S. Goldberg's practice, we offer BOTOX® for the treatment of excessive underarm sweating. When BOTOX® neurotoxin is injected into the skin, it blocks the chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate the sweat glands to contract and secrete sweat. One BOTOX® therapy session for hyperhidrosis will usually last about 6 months.

Axillary (underarm) hyperhidrosis is a very annoying, emotionally upsetting and expensive (ruined clothing) condition. Heat and stress caus the genetically predisposed individual to sweat excessively.

Nerves to the sweat glands release the chemical acetylcholine which stimulates the sweat glands to secrete sweat.

Botox® blocks the release of acetylcholine from the nerves and thus prevents sweating. This block may last as long as 6 months.
