Psoriasis

Treatments

Psoriasis is a noncontagious, usually hereditary, autoimmune disease of the skin. It's most common form, plaque psoriasis, is characterized by the appearance of raised, red patches or lesions covered with a silvery white buildup of dead skin cells, called scale. This type of psoriasis is typically found on the elbows, knees, scalp and lower back. Psoriasis occurs when the immune system sends out faulty signals that accelerate the growth cycle of skin cells. A normal skin cell matures and falls off of the body in 28 to 30 days while a skin cell on a person with psoriasis can take only 3 to 4 days to mature and shed. The result is that cells pile up on the surface of the skin and form lesions.

We treat all forms of psoriasis with multiple modalities, including potent prescription ointments, narrowband UVB ultraviolet in our state-of-the art on-site phototherapy booth right in our own office, and systemic drugs for the most severe cases.
