Vitiligo
Treatments
Vitiligo is characterized by slow development of white, irregular patches on the skin. It occurs when the body makes antibodies against its own skin so that pigment cells of the skin are destroyed. As a result, these cells can no longer produce melanin, the pigment that determines the color of your skin, hair and eyes. Vitiligo is an incurable condition that affects men and women of all races and ages, but is especially distressing for people with darker skin because it is much more noticeable.
At Dr. Goldberg's practice, we specialize in diseases of the skin. We treat vitiligo by exposing the skin to narrowband UVB ultraviolet light in an on-site phototherapy booth right in our office. This therapy activates pigment producing cells surrounding the depigmented areas or those located deep in hair follicles within the vitiliago patched and repigmentation will gradually occur.
